The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (often called the Mormon Church) teaches that spiritual gifts are mental and emotional capacities granted to people according to their relationship with the Spirit of Christ, or in other words, the light and knowledge that every person is given to know good from evil. As people (whether they are members of the Mormon faith or not) exercise faith in God and in His son, Jesus Christ, they are enlightenA photo of two elderly men giving a blessing to an elderly woman by the laying on of hands.ed with spiritual gifts.

Book of Mormon prophet Moroni says that spiritual gifts “come unto every man severally, according as he will,” (Moroni 10:17). If one desires to have spiritual gifts to benefit others (and not as a sign to prove the existence of God) and exercises faith in God and in Jesus Christ, they will be blessed with spiritual gifts according to God’s will. God knows what gifts each individual most needs. Once granted, spiritual gifts continue to be developed as we develop our faith. Similarly, if our faith falters, so will the power of our spiritual capacities.

The Mormon doctrine of spiritual gifts states that some of these gifts include, but are not limited to:

The ability to discern meaning in complex things.
The ability to comfort those in need of comfort.
The ability to feel empathy for others.
The ability to bare a powerful testimony of God to others.
The ability to exercise greater faith.
The ability to believe in the truthful testimonies of others.
The ability to be an effective teacher.
The ability to apply spiritual knowledge to life, to work and to fields of academic study.
The ability to speak and interpret other languages (gift of tongues).
The ability to have faith to be healed from sickness.
The ability to receive revelation from God about our personal lives.

All of the spiritual gifts or charismatic gifts are found in the Mormon Church, including healings, the gift of tongues, revelation, etc. The Mormon Prophet Joseph Smith was called of God to be the one to restore these gifts to the earth in our day, by the power of Jesus Christ.
