Do Mormons Practice Polygamy or Plural Marriage?
The Mormon prophet Gordon B Hinkley answered this question best by saying, "This Church has nothing whatever to do with those practicing polygamy. They are not members of this Church….If any of our members are found to be practicing plural marriage, they are excommunicated, the most serious penalty the Church can impose. Not only are those so involved in direct violation of the civil law, they are in violation of the law of this Church."
Mormons do not practice polygamy or plural marriage and have not since 1890, when Utah joined the union. By studying Mormon history, we know that Joseph Smith practiced polygamy and many other Mormon men at the time. The prophet Joseph Smith received a revelation from God telling him that polygamy was necessary at that point in history. The Lord has given this command in the past, like when he instructed Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses and many others to practice polygamy.
In 1890, President Wilford Woodruff received a revelation that polygamy should cease. By that point, polygamy was not needed because there were enough Mormon men for every woman in the church. Now, if anyone in the Mormon Church practices polygamy, they are excommunicated from the Mormon Church. Polygamy is not tolerated.
